The short answer is that propane can transition from liquid to gaseous states quickly, based on temperature and pressure.
Propane has a low boiling point (the temperature at which it moves from liquid to gas) of roughly -44°F, compared to water, which boils at 212°F. At room temperature, propane naturally exists as a gas. For storage and transportation purposes, propane is kept as a liquid under high pressure. Inside our delivery trucks and your propane tank, propane is pressurized to about 150 pounds per square inch.
Whenever your furnace, water heater, gas range or another product in your home needs propane, pressure is relieved, and the propane transitions from liquid to gas. In this state, it travels to the burner of your appliance.
Propane and natural gas are closely related. Most propane in the U.S. is a co-product of natural gas extraction (meaning no additional wells need to be drilled to produce it).
Propane is denser than natural gas. While propane can be compressed and transported in trucks, natural gas is typically transported through the pipes of gas utilities. Natural gas is primarily composed of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is many times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere over a 20-year period. By contrast, propane contains zero methane.
