Heating oil or electric heat? The answer isn’t as simple as comparing the price of a gallon of heating oil with your electric rate. The type and age of the equipment already in your home, how it delivers heat, and what it would cost to switch all deserve a closer look.
That’s especially true if you already heat your home with oil and are considering a change. Before replacing a system that has served you well, it helps to understand what you would actually be switching to and whether the cost and comfort make sense for your home.
How a heating system delivers warmth can noticeably affect how your home feels. An oil-fired furnace sends heated air through the ductwork, while a boiler circulates hot water or steam through baseboards or radiators.
Heat pumps work differently. Rather than creating heat directly in the home, they transfer heat from outside and may run for longer periods to maintain the thermostat setting. That doesn’t make one approach right for every house. But if you’re used to the way an oil-fired system heats your home, comfort is worth considering alongside cost before making a switch.
The price of heating oil and the electric rate only tell part of the story. What you actually spend to heat your home also depends on how much energy you use, the efficiency of your equipment, and the type of electric system you’re considering.
If switching means buying new equipment or making changes to your home, include those upfront costs in the comparison, too. A lower monthly bill doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll spend less overall if it takes a significant investment to get there.
Heating oil and electric heat have something important in common: both generally need electricity to operate. An oil-fired furnace or boiler uses electricity for components such as the burner, controls, blower, or circulator, so having oil in your tank doesn’t necessarily mean your heat will continue running during a power outage.
Your heating oil supply, however, remains stored right at your home. Once power is restored and your heating system can operate again, the fuel already in your tank is there and ready to use.
If your current heating oil system is doing its job, switching energy sources isn’t your only option. Depending on the age and condition of your equipment, replacing an older furnace or boiler with a newer, more efficient oil-heat system may also be worth considering.
That’s an important distinction: replacing your heating equipment and changing your home’s energy source are two different decisions. Before doing both at once, find out what condition your current system is in and what an updated oil-heat system could offer. You may find that staying with heating oil makes more sense for your home and budget.
